“Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrew 4:16
The Right-Hand Kingdom’s impact on the Left-Hand Kingdom is a powerful tool in the hand of Almighty God. Consider Jeremiah Lanphier, a tailor called to be an evangelist. On the streets of New York, in the midst of the panic surrounding Wall Street, he reached out to souls by establishing a noontime prayer meeting. On the basis of Hebrews 4:16, he faithfully handed out a leaflet inviting merchants, shoppers, businessmen, clerks, and strangers to lift up their needs to the Throne of Grace! He urged those in need to confidently come to Christ’s throne, where they could find mercy and grace in times of need.
At first, six gathered, then twenty, then forty; after that, the floodgates broke! Fire stations, police departments, stores, churches, and even bars opened up their doors as places of prayer. Thousands came to Christ. Newspapers reported hundreds of incidents of revival. The New York Times devoted entire editions to the revival with the headline: “Revival Sweeps the Country.” Starting on the eastern seaboard, it quickly pressed westward. A man from Omaha reported, “On my journey East I have found a continuous prayer meeting two thousand miles long.”
According to R. Morgan’s Defining Moments, in Chicago, one man said, “The Metropolitan Hall is crowded to suffocation.” One of Chicago’s 21-year-old citizens, who was moved by the revival to enter evangelistic work, was D. L. Moody! Historian Wesley Duewel said, “A canopy of holy and awesome Holy Spirit revival influence seemed to hang like an invisible cloud over many parts of the United States.” The Fulton Street Prayer Meetings lead to hundreds of thousands coming to Christ. R. Morgan wrote, “It is remarkable that no great evangelist or pastor was at the center of this movement.” It was largely unknown laymen, men and women lifting up their hearts in Jesus’ Name. Still today, in confidence, the greatest impact the Kingdom of the Church can have on the Kingdom of the State is found at the throne of God’s grace!
