“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21

Paul’s confession leaves no doubt as to his loyalty. He lived for Christ and considered dying for Christ to be of greatest gain. A public pledge lived out to the point of death. By the way, Paul, as Christ did and we should, also showed respect to the office of governing authorities, even when the officers of those offices were corrupt. The only stated exception is, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

Pledging one’s allegiance is a solemn matter of commitment. The declaration of loyalty to a person or a cause requires submission. A public submission willingly and emphatically displayed in word and deed.

On June 14th our Nation celebrated Flag Day. Respect for our Nation’s flag has suffered decline. Protesters have used the 1st Amendment to enable them to desecrate the Stars and Stripes. In my opinion, it has been orchestrated under the pretext of freedom of speech. Allegiance to self outweighs all other commitments. Their pledge has become, “I pledge allegiance to MYSELF!”

The public, heartfelt repetition of pledges, in my opinion, can effectively take the focus off self and properly place it on the institutions God has established. The schools I have attended all displayed our Nation’s flag and the congregations I have served, attended, and visited all displayed our Nation’s flag and the Christian flag. Giving those flags and their pledges a place of honor is of paramount importance. Please stand, place your right hand over your heart, and repeat after me…

The Pledge to the Flag (1954):

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The Pledge to the Christian Flag:

I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.

I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands; one brotherhood, uniting all mankind in service and in love.
